If we hope to have a satisfying old age in later life then we need to be able to imagine what a rich and meaningful old age might look, sound and feel like. Envisioning this stage of life before we actually get there means our vision of old age and care is more likely be shaped by what matters to us now than the losses we might experience in later life. The earlier we begin to imagine this older age, the more time we have to take the steps required to make this dream more of a reality.
We can have a more empowered outlook on old age when we are free from the negative stereotypes and stigmas that can cloud our vision of this stage of life. Luke offers a way of exploring this chapter of our lives without all the gloom and doom that is often associated with it. By engaging your creativity, courage, compassion and sense of independence Luke invites you to create a personal vision of care that truly inspires you.
There is no need to wait until you get “old” in order to nurture this outlook. You can begin to shape a positive vision of your old age at any age, so why not start now!
Luke Tanner is a therapist, consultant and trainer working with older people, care providers and dementia care services. Luke focuses on the development of therapeutic cultures of care that deliver quality of life within the community and residential care settings.
Having worked within both humanising and dehumanising cultures of care Luke recognises the importance of creating communities of care ourselves, from the people, places and things that make us who we are.
Luke believes that real change in our society’s approach to Old Age and Care should not be left to “the professionals !”. The professionalisation and commodification of old age care has lead to some profoundly controlling, dehumanising and stigmatising experiences of old age and care. Every opportunity to empower someone to develop their own personal vision of care in later life helps promote a form of care of the people, for the people, by the people.
