Staying in Touch
My own experience of caring for family members experiencing a dementia helped me understand that touch can remain a lifeline for many people experiencing a dementia. In 2011 I collaborated with Dementia Care Matters, mental health nurses and massage therapists in order to explore the role of touch from an ethical, theoretical and clinical perspective. The result of this collaboration is my training programme Touch in Care and book, Trusting in Touch, published by Jessica Kingsley in January 2017.
As a dementia care therapist I draw on my research, body psychotherapy and massage training and 100's of hours therapy work in residential dementia care settings. My understanding of the different stages of a dementia and the meaning and effects of touch helps me to communicate more effectively with touch and provide the experiences of comfort, connection and security that really matter.
